ABOUT THE GALLERY The Gail Martin Gallery is the only gallery in the United States exhibiting a broad range of ancient, antique and ethnographic textiles along with contemporary fiber art. The gallery is committed to connecting and comparing the old and the new either visually or technically and to exhibit textiles of timeless aesthetic merit that show individual creativity. The gallery has dealt with ancient, antique and ethnographic textiles for more than 30 years (previous to 1994 as Martin & Ullman Artweave Textile Gallery) and since 1998 has presented the work of contemporary fiber artists. We are deeply knowledgeable in the cultural creativity and techniques of many different peoples around the world who make textiles and the idea of continuing traditional textile techniques in our time influences our choices of contemporary fiber artists.
Right now, as always, the gallery is exhibiting historical textiles with emphasis on those from Central Asia, Africa and Pre-Colombian Peru and Indonesia as well as from other areas of the world, along with the work of seven contemporary fiber artists. ABOUT GAIL MARTIN Gail Martin (BA., MA., Brooklyn College) has been an art dealer specializing in ancient, antique and ethnographic textiles for more than thirty years. In 1972, following travels in Afghanistan and Turkey, she established, with two partners, the first gallery in the United States devoted to presenting rare and artistically significant textiles. She has been the sole owner since 1987. She was one of the driving forces that established such textiles as fine art. Most major museums and private collections of Pre-Columbian and Asiatic textiles are indebted to her findings. She has been instrumental in contributing to the body of knowledge about a variety of textiles and costumes through her collecting activities, numerous exhibitions and her dedication to the preservation and conservation of textiles. She is curator of the Guido Goldman Collection of Central Asian Ikats since its inception in 1975 and curatorial consultant to the exhibition, IKAT: Splendid Silks of Central Asia, organized by The American Foundation for Textile Art and to the Jewish Museum and the Denver Art Museum for their presentation of the exhibition. She is a member of the Advisory Council of The Textile Museum in Washington, DC. and is a member of the Textile Society of America and National Association of Dealers in Ancient, Oriental and Primitive Art.
